The Guardian Angel written and directed by Arto Halonen, will premiere at the Warsaw International Film Festival held in Poland 12.-21.10.2018. The festival was established in 1985 and as a part the International Federation of Film Producers Associations festivals together with Cannes, Venice and Montreal; it is one of the most significant ones in the world.

 Finnish theatrical release of The Guardian Angel was in March 2018 and the films distribution rights have been sold to over 60 countries including France, Russia, Japan, Poland and India. The Guardian Angel is also published as a novel by WSOY, one of the leading publishing houses in Finland. It was written together with Kevin Frazier, and the book’s translation rights have been sold to Denmark, Italy, Serbia and Portugal.

The Guardian Angel is a psychological thriller based on true events taking place in 1950’s Denmark. The most incredible hypnosis crimes in history send an investigator and a hypnotist trough a world of psychological manipulation. The film features international stars Pilou Asbæk (Game Of Thrones), Josh Lucas (Beautiful Mind, Sweet Home Alabama), Rade Šerbedžija (Downton Abbey, Eyes Wide Shut) and Finnish Sara Soulié (Nymphs, Other Girls).

The Guardian Angel selected to Santa Barbara International Film Festival

The Guardian Angel written and directed by Arto Halonen, will be screening at the 34th Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF), one of the leading film festivals in the United States.

Amongst the seven chosen feature films to compete in the festival category of The Best Nordic Feature are also Land of Hope (Finland), A Moon of My Own (Sweden), In Love and War (Denmark), Let Me Fall (Iceland), Phoenix (Norway) and The Bird Catcher (Norway). The Guardian Angel premiered internationally at the esteemed Warsaw Film Festival in 2018 and the films distribution rights have been sold to 60+ countries including France, Russia, Japan, Poland and India.

Santa Barbara International Film Festival is an eleven day event held at the seaside city of Santa Barbara, California. It is the last major film festival before the Academy Awards and traditionally there are multiple Oscar nominees in the festival’s program. SBIFF grants filmmakers also honorary awards; this year’s winners include e.g. Glenn Close (Maltin Modern Master Award), Viggo Mortensen (American Riviera Award) and Melissa McCarthy (Montecito Award).

Arto Halonen directing an international co-production The Guardian Angel

Arto Halonen, known for his films Princess and A Patriotic Man, is directing a Finnish-Danish-Croatian co-production The Guardian Angel starring a cast of international actors. The male lead is played by Pilou Asbæk, an internationally rising star appearing in the sixth and the up-coming seventh season of Game of Thrones, who made his breakthrough in the critically acclaimed television series Borgen. Other significant roles are portrayed by Josh Lucas, Rade Šerbedžija, Sara Soulié, Cyron Melville, Johannes Lassen and Christopher Fulford.

Josh Lucas is an American actor known for his supporting role in the four-time Academy Award winner A Beautiful Mind, the male lead in the audience hit film Sweet Home Alabama, as well as several other internationally successful Hollywood productions. Rade Šerbedžija, the most famous actor in the Balkan area, made his breakthrough in Milčo Mančevski’s Oscar-nominated film Before the Rain, and has since then played a number of roles in several internationally successful films, such as Eyes Wide Shut by Stanley Kubrick. Sara Soulié is a Finnish-Danish actress with a background in Finnish films and television series, including The Nymphs. Cyron Melville is known for the Oscar-nominated A Royal Affair and Johannes Lassen for his role in the historical drama series 1864. Christopher Fulford has a reputation as the stronghold of British crime drama series, such as A Touch of Frost and Inspector Morse.

The Guardian Angel, written by Halonen, is a psychological thriller based on a true story of a man who used hypnosis to turn another man into robber and a killer in Copenhagen in the 1950s. The story follows the incredible investigation of these crimes as a young police becomes obsessed with catching the psychological manipulator, in a battle of minds and wills.

The artistic crew consist of several experienced professionals, with Pini Hellstedt as the director of photography, Jussi Rautaniemi as the editor, Tuomas Kantelinen as the composer and Kirka Sainio as the sound designer. The production designer is Søren Schwartzberg. The film is a Finnish-Danish-Croation co-production. The main producer is Arto Halonen and Art Films production, and the film is co-produced by Timo T. Lahtinen’s Smile Entertainment and Igor A. Nola’s MP Films. Halonen and Nola have previously joined forces working with A Patriotic Man and The Liberation of Skopje directed by Rade Šerbedžija.

The Guardian Angel is currently being filmed in Croatia and is set to have its’ premiere in February 2018. The Scandinavian distributor is Scanbox.

The Guardian Angel and Game of Thrones star Pilou Asbæk to be awarded at HIFF

Danish actor Pilou Asbæk will receive the first Nordic Flair Award at the 30th HIFF. The award ceremony will take place at a public event organised by the HIFF and Yle. Asbæk will be seen in 2018 in Finnish director Arto Halonen’s new film.
HIFF and Finnish Film Affair will award the Danish actor Pilou Asbæk with the Nordic Flair Award on September 21st. The award serves as a recognition of Asbæk’s brave role choices and his internationally renowned career.
The Nordic Flair Award is given to a person working in the film industry whilst boosting Nordic talent internationally.
The award will be given at a public event In Spotlight: Pilou Asbæk where JP Pulkkinen will interview Asbæk about his career in film and television. The event will take place on September 21st at 5pm at Kulttuuriareena Gloria. It will be streamed live at Yle Areena. Tickets to the event can be bought from the festival’s ticket offices starting Monday, September 11th.
Pilou Asbæk’s acting talent can be witnessed next March in Arto Halonen‘s new film The Guardian Angel. Asbæk is known for his roles in the tv series Game of Thrones (2016–) and Borgen (2010–2013). In addition, he has had important roles in many films, among them A War (HIFF 2016), Ben-Hur (2016) and Ghost in the Shell (2017).
Finnish Film Affair (September 19th–21st) is HIFF’s industry sidebar. For the first time the FFA organises this year a side event, the Nordic Flair, which focuses on bringing together Nordic filmmakers and international film professionals.
Finland’s biggest film festival Helsinki International Film Festival – Love & Anarchy takes over the silver screens of Helsinki for the 30th time on September 14th–24th.
The Guardian Angel will have its premiere on March 9th 2018.
